Mikel Arteta
Tactical Director - Controlled Structure & Rest Defense
Controlled Structure & Rest Defense
1. Rest Defense Structure
Arteta emphasizes the importance of structure while in possession. A minimum of five players must remain behind the ball at all times, forming a 3-2 or 2-3 barrier. This "rest defense" prevents opponents from launching quick counter-attacks, choking transitions immediately.
2. Zonal Blocking & Wide Traps
When defending in a mid-block, the team shifts as a cohesive unit. Passing lanes to the center are completely blocked, forcing the opponent to play wide. Once the ball travels to the fullback, the winger, near-side midfielder, and fullback trap the receiver, forcing a turnover.
3. Positional Flexibility in Attack
During build-up, fullbacks invert into midfield (creating a 3-2 structure), allowing the attacking midfielders to push higher into the halfspaces. The wingers hug the touchline to stretch the opponent's backline.
4. Striker Telemetry Requirements
Arteta's striker must act as a physical reference point. They must have excellent hold-up capability to allow midfielders to run past them, show exceptional work rate to press the opposing goalkeeper, and possess the size to challenge for aerial direct balls.
